National Make A Dog’s Day: Uplifting Dog Enthusiasts Everywhere
On October 22, 2024, the U.S. will once again celebrate National Make A Dog’s Day, a day started by Subaru in 2019 to honor and improve the lives of dogs, particularly shelter dogs that often get overlooked due to their age or special needs. Here’s a round-up of what’s happening this year!
When we adopted Jazmine from the shelter she had been surrendered by her previous owner due to him having cancer and not able to care for her, he had also surrendered her puppies the month before. She weighed 38 pounds when we got her and was heart worm positive, with a lot of loving care and medical treatment she has fully recovered and is now the beautiful Boxer you see above at 68 pounds.
- The Origins of National Make A Dog’s Day Subaru of America introduced this day as part of their “Subaru Loves Pets” initiative. Since then, millions of people have joined the movement, which aims to promote the adoption of less popular shelter dogs, including seniors and those with disabilities. The initiative has facilitated over 60,000 dog adoptions to date【6†source】【9†source】.
- Shelter Support and Fundraising Subaru has committed to contributing over $3 million to animal shelters this month, raising awareness about pet adoption and supporting the care of shelter pets nationwide. Many Subaru dealerships across the country are hosting events to encourage adoption, covering fees, and donating to shelters【7†source】【9†source】.
- Ways to Celebrate with Your Dog Whether you have a furry friend or not, there are many ways to make a dog’s day. Popular suggestions include adopting a pet, visiting a shelter, volunteering, or simply spending quality time with your dog—whether by taking them for an extra-long walk, baking special treats, or arranging playdates【6†source】【8†source】.
- Celebrating the “Underdogs” A significant aspect of this celebration is bringing attention to “underdogs”—those that may struggle to find forever homes. Subaru encourages dog lovers to consider adopting older or differently-abled dogs who are just as lovable and loyal as any other pet【8†source】.
- Social Media Campaigns Joining in on the celebration can be as easy as sharing the love online. Use the hashtag #MakeADogsDay to promote awareness and share photos of your pups. Subaru’s campaign has seen huge social media engagement over the years, helping spread the message to adopt, not shop【9†source】.
